- Shostakovich: 2 Pieces for String Octet
- Cutler: Music for Sunflowers
- Fokkens: New Commission for String Trio & String Orchestra (world premiere)
- Tchaikovsky: Serenade for Strings
Project Instrumental make their JdP Series premiere and bring its spring season to a close, igniting a typically imaginative programme of the never heard before, the rarely heard and the preferably heard. A concert for those who prefer their classical music experiences enlivening and colourful, Sunflowers & Other Sounds balances two of the most exciting voices writing music today, alongside two pre-eminences in the history of Western classical music. The world premieres of Fokkens’ neo concerto grosso-like work for string trio and string orchestra and Cutler’s new arrangement of his Music for Sunflowers for solo viola and string orchestra are bookended with Shostakovich’s youthful, avant-gardist Prelude & Scherzo for string octet and Tchaikovsky’s perennially soaring Serenade for Strings. Recently described as “simply knockout”, Project Instrumental brings thrilling performances to unbounded audiences. Bold, imaginative and boundary defying, this virtuosic ensemble strips back the peripherals with their straightforward contemporary approach to classical music.
