In 1627‒28 Charles I acquired the cream of the Gonzaga art collection of ancient statues and sumptuous Renaissance paintings. This talk will recount how Daniel Nijs, a Flemish merchant in Venice, became the pivotal figure in the greatest art deal of the 17th century.
