Motivated by liberal ideals of individual freedom, imagination and an affinity with nature, the Romantics believed poetry had the power to transform society and rejuvenate humankind by giving a voice to the marginalised and overturning established ways of thinking. Through readings and discussion, poet Rebecca Watts will consider Wordsworth’s influence on her debut collection, The Met Office Advises Caution, and reflect on poetry’s potential to inspire openness in readers and writers in the 21st century.
