Where the first lecture focused on ambidexterity and the associated governance challenges, the second will focus on efficiency. Professor Adler will show that the world-class efficiency that Toyota achieves in its automobile assembly plants depends on the company’s ability to give bureaucracy an “enabling” rather than “coercive” form. In this case too, we will see that implementation of the enabling bureaucracy principle both depends on and facilitates Toyota’s shift towards a socialist structure.
