This talk will cover Sir Venki’s experience of growing up in India and moving to the USA at the age of 19 to obtain a PhD in physics, then switching immediately to biology and spending much of his life working on the ribosome. It will include such things as difficult career choices, including moves within and eventually out of the USA, as well as a discussion of the role of the ribosome in translation and antibiotic function. It is hoped that afterwards there will be a broad-ranging discussion of the choices facing young scientists today.
