In this FLJS lecture, Stephen Tierney, Professor of Constitutional Theory, University of Edinburgh, discusses the circumstances surrounding the forthcoming referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union.
This lecture will consider whether or not the referendum is an appropriate way to make such fundamental decisions, exploring the democratic strengths and weaknesses of referendum democracy.

Prof Tierney is Director of the Edinburgh Centre for Constitutional Law and ESRC Senior Research Fellow with the Centre of Constitutional Change. He currently serves as Legal Adviser to the House of Lords Constitution Committee and is co-editor of the UK Constitutional Law blog.
