Depicting the ordinary, the 'everyday' in art is a modern concept. Art's role, one could argue, is to show the extra-ordinary, the otherworldliness. It is there to elevate rather than just observe, but, especially since the 16th century, artists have started to depict the world around them. We should not believe that this is pure, unaltered reality. It is artistic interpretation making the day-to-day image-worthy.
