Theatre was at the heart of the women's suffrage campaign, from three-act plays of seduction and political intrigue, to comic sketches, dialogues, pageants and pastiches. Women took command of the stage to re-write familiar plots, challenge assumptions, inspire and discomfort audiences in theatres and on the streets. This lecture will look at how performance became a key tool in women's campaign for the vote, and how it enabled activists to engage the public in innovative ways that other suffrage writings could not.
