The concert takes as its theme the large body of Marian works in Oxford’s most important manuscript collection of Tudor Music, the Baldwin Part-books, preserved at Christ Church. That John Baldwin should have included so much older music devoted to Mary in his compendium was an extraordinarily daring act during the reign of the Protestant Queen Elizabeth, and demonstrates the power of music to evoke an already ‘lost age’ of Catholic devotion and music in Elizabethan England.
