In March 1815, Jane Austen wrote to her niece Caroline that even in her ‘sedate time of life’, rereading one of Genlis’s tales would be sure to put her ‘in a rage’. This is just one of Austen’s recorded responses to the work of a French author whose works were omnipresent in the British literary marketplace throughout Austen’s lifetime. This talk will explore the connections between Austen and Genlis, who shared a publisher in John Murray II.
