Science Christmas Lectures

Working with Local

For several years,  Year 9 students from schools across Oxfordshire, Milton Keynes, and Buckinghamshire have been invited to attend a series of science lectures at the University Museum of Natural History. These lectures take place in December and, like the popular Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, these lectures aim to inspire & encourage students towards science, and are suitable for students of all abilities.

The speakers for the most recent series of lectures in 2009 were Professor Marcus du Sautoy, a Mathematician (Why Beckham Chose the 23 Shirt), Dr Stephen Cameron, a Computer Scientist (Robocup: football and other robots), and Dr Malcolm Stewart, a Chemist (The Cool and Crazy Chemistry Show). Following the lectures there was a Christmas Science Quiz around the Museum and also an opportunity to handle the Museum’s Madagascan Hissing Cockroaches with Museum staff.

Information regarding the 2010 Lectures will be posted here during Autumn term 2010. Contact details below.

The lectures are aimed mainly for local Aimhigher target schools but schools in the region interested in attending can contact the MPLS Division's Schools Liaison Officer Dr Zareen Ahmed-Stewart by emailing zareen.ahmed-stewart@mpls.ox.ac.uk.
