2012 Funding: PGCE students
Tuition Charge and Support
The tuition charge for one year of PGCE study for UK and EU students at Oxford from 2012 will be dependent upon a student's household income. All students are able to take out a tuition charge loan for the full amount they are liable for.
Students from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the EU with household incomes of £25,000 or less will be eligible for a reduced tuition fee. If your household income is above £25,000, the tuition charge will be £9,000.
This fee package, and the levels cited in the table below, are all subject to approval by the Office for Fair Access and we hope to provide an update on these arrangements in late May 2012.
| Household Income | Tuition Charge |
| £0 - £16,000 | £6,000 |
| £16,001 - £20,000 | £7,000 |
| £20,001 - £25,000 | £8,000 |
| £25,001+ | £9,000 |
Welsh students are not eligible for a reduced tuition charge, as they are able to access a £5,535 grant from Student Finance Wales towards their tuition charge and can apply for a loan for the remaining £3,465.
No students are required to pay their tuition charges up front.
Independent Students
If you're an independent student, your income and your partner's income is assessed. You're classed as an independent student if:
- you're 25 or older
- you have a child
- you have no living parents
- you are or have been married or in a civil partnership
- you've supported yourself for three years
- you're estranged from your parents
Living Costs and Support
The University estimates that basic term time living costs for students living in college accommodation in 2012/13 will be around £7,600, and may be around £10,300 if living out privately, as costs will usually be incurred for a 12 month period. Students will also need to budget for the costs of additional travel for placements.
Government Support
English PGCE students are able to apply for the same maintenance support package from the government as English undergraduates.
We do not have full details yet for the government support available for PGCE students from Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Information will be updated on this page when available.
EU students from outside the UK are generally not eligible for government grants and loans to help with the cost of living whilst at University; though there are some exceptions. EU students must ensure therefore that they have enough funding for their living costs at Oxford from other sources, and may be asked to provide evidence of this before they take up their place.
TDA Bursaries
Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) Bursaries are available for PGCE students from all regions of the UK who are studying in England. Bursary amounts vary depending on the subject you are training to teach and the class of undergraduate degree you have.
The following table shows the levels of TDA Bursaries specifically available to PGCE students at Oxford:
| Degree Class | Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Modern Languages | Biology, English, Geography, History, R.E. |
| First | £20,000 | £9,000 |
| 2:1 | £15,000 | £5,000 |
| 2:2 | £12,000 | £0 |
Full details of the scheme can be found on the TDA website.
University Support
If you are a Home/EU student and you are not eligible for a TDA bursary, you will be eligible for an Oxford bursary on the same basis as full-time undergraduate students, though you will not be eligible for a start-up bursary.
