Post in a Nutshell

University in a NutshellPost 16 in a Nutshell is designed to tackle the impact of the end of AimHigher and scaling down of Connexions services, by providing careers advice to students in Years 10 & 11.  It focuses on asking students to think about whom they are, what defines them as people and how this can lead them on a path to an exciting, fulfilling and challenging future.

The resources have been designed to be flexible so they can fit into school timetables and can be adapted as part of a careers day, Personal Health and Social Education session or extra-curricular activity.

The workshops require students to be the busiest people in the room, inputting ideas and engaging with university staff and student mentors.

The resources cater for students with a wide variety of aspirations and educational destinations.  The resources are designed to offer participants the opportunity for self reflection in an enjoyable format.

We aim to have students leave each session more informed and with a sense of achievement and direction.

Our aims

  • Introduce specific skills and methods for choosing their own path to Higher Education, Further Education and their early careers.
  • Reinforce that research and choices are the students responsibility but giving each student the resources and skills to disseminate this information.
  • Help students to indentify subject and personal preferences so that they can begin to consider career/ study options.
  • Make careers input interesting, engaging and hands on rather than static.
  • Aid school with ‘careers’ and Personal Health and Social Education programmes.

How it works

These downloadable resources are available for schools to use during their SEAL, PHSE or Careers lessons. Each session has a presentation, resources for students and a lesson plan to enable teachers to run the session.
