Oxford Young Ambassadors

OYA 1The Oxford Young Ambassadors (OYA) programme is a three-year sustained contact programme targeted at students who have little or no family history of higher education.

The programme empowers students to become Ambassadors for further and higher education and enables them to take the information back to school to share with their peers and communities.

The OYA programme recruits 30 Year 9 students from across Oxfordshire to take part in monthly activities. These workshops run until the end of Year 11, at which point we invite ambassadors to a graduation ceremony at the University.

What do Oxford Young Ambassadors do?

Oxford Young Ambassadors engage in various events each academic year and they work closely with current Oxford student mentors. The Ambassadors meet with us once a month and activities include drama workshops, chemistry demonstrations, visits to museums and botanical gardens, as well as getting inside many Oxford colleges. In the second year Ambassadors work on academic sessions, designed to help them with their GCSE exams.

Each year Ambassadors also take part in an annual project; this takes the form of a book club in the first year and a peer mentoring scheme in the second year.

The programme prepares students for life after secondary education no matter which path they choose.

As Ambassadors for further and higher education, not only do they personally become aware of their options but they are able to share this information with other young people at their school.

Current Ambassadors

OYA 2We have two groups of current Ambassadors; our Year 11 group have been with us since October 2010, and our Year 10 group of Ambassadors have just begun year 2 of the programme.
