International Qualifications

International 1 In order to make a competitive application to Oxford, students need to have already achieved, or expect to obtain, one of the following qualifications with the grades shown, or another equivalent. You may take any qualification from any country: for example, students in any country in the world may be able to take A-levels, or qualifications from the American education system, to meet the general entrance requirements.

There are also specific entrance requirements for some courses, particularly in the sciences. The qualifications below will only be sufficient alternatives to A-level where they cover the same content as the required A-levels, to the appropriate standard.

United Kingdom

A-levels	Conditional offers for students studying A-levels range between AAA and AAA depending on the subject.
Pre-U	Conditional offers are likely to vary between D2, D2, D3 and D3, D3, D3 depending on the subject. D2 is considered to be equivalent to an A* grade at A-level and D3 to an A grade.
Scottish Highers	AAAAB or AAAAA in Scottish Highers, usually supplemented by two or more Advanced Highers. Offers made to candidates on the basis of the Advanced Higher subjects are likely to be set at AA for two subjects, and AAB for three subjects.
Welsh Baccalaureate	Advanced Diploma with AA to AA at A-level alongside the Core Certificate at Level 3.

Other qualifications

International Baccalaureate	A total score of at least 38 points including core points, with 6s and 7s in subjects taken at the Higher level.
American education system	SAT Reasoning Test with at least 1,400 in Critical Reading and Mathematics and preferably also 700 or more in Writing, giving a combined score of at least 2,100 OR ACT with a score of at least 32 out of 36. AND Grade 5 in three or more Advanced Placement Tests in appropriate subjects OR SAT Subject Tests in three appropriate subjects at 700 or better.
European Baccalaureate	An average of 85% or above, with scores of between 8 and 9 in specified subjects.

European Union

Austria	Reifeprüfungszeugnis/Maturazeugnis with scores of 1 (sehr gut) in the majority of subjects taken.
Belgium	Diploma van Hoger Secundair Onderwijs, Certificat d'Enseignement Secondaire Supérieur or Abschlusszeugnis der Oberstufe des Sekundarunterrichts with an overall average score of at least 8. Scores of 9 may be required in particular subjects.
Bulgaria	Diploma Za Sredno Obrazovanie with overall scores of 5.75.
Croatia	Matura with the Maturalna Svjedodzba (matriculation certificate), with scores of 5
Cyprus	Apolytirion with an average of 19 / 20 points and normally 2 or more A-levels at grade A.
Czech Republic	Maturitni Zkouška / Maturita with scores of 1 (výborný) in the majority of subjects taken.
Denmark	The Danish Studentereksamen (STX, HHX or HTX) or HF with an overall average score of at least 11 (using the new 7 step grade scale). Specific marks may also be required in Level A subjects.
Estonia	Gümnaasiumi Lõputunnistus, including the Riigieksam with an overall average score of at least 90%, with scores of 5 in 5 individual subjects.
Finland	Successful completion of the Ylioppilastutkintotodistus/ Studentexamensbetyg with at least four subjects, where no individual subject score is below eximia cum laude approbatur (excellent) and at least two subjects are at laudatur (outstanding).
France	French Baccalauréat or Option Internationale du Baccalauréat with an average score of at least 15.
Germany	Abitur with a total mark between 1.0 and 1.5 with scores of between 13 and 15 in individual subjects.
Greece	Apolytirion with an average of 19 / 20 points and normally 2 or more A-levels at grade A.
Hungary	A student taking the Erettsegi/Matura needs to take five subjects and achieve a score of five in at least four subjects. Where there is a required subject for the degree scheme (e.g. Mathematics for Mathematics, Physics or Engineering degrees) the student would be expected to take the Higher (emelt szintu) examination in this subject.
Ireland	Leaving Certificate with a minimum of grades AAAABB at Higher / Honours level.
Italy	Diploma Di Esame Di Stato with an overall score of at least 95% and may also require particular grades in specific subjects.
Latvia	The Atestāts par vispārējo vidējo izglītību would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application, whatever grades have been achieved. This qualification would need to be supplemented by further study such as A Levels, the IB, or a year at a Latvian university.
Lithuania	Brandos Atestatas with an overall average of at least 9, with scores of at least 9 in the majority of subjects.
Luxembourg	A pass in the Diplôme de Fin d'Etudes Secondaires with an overall score of at least 50.
Malta	Advanced Matriculation with A grades in the A-Level subjects taken.
The Netherlands	Diploma Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs (VWO) with a minimum of 8 in individual subjects.
Poland	Polish Matura / Swiadectwo Dojrzalosci with 85-90% in all subjects with the relevant subjects taken at the higher (extended) level.
Portugal	Diploma de Ensino Secundário/Certificado with a score of 18 or higher.
Romania	Diploma De Bacalaureat with an overall average of at least 8.
Slovakia	Slovakian Maturitńa Skúška/Maturita with v'yborn'y (excellent) in the majority of subjects.
Slovenia	Matura with scores of 5 in the majority of subjects.
Spain	Attainment of 9 out of 10 from the combined Bachillerato and PAU. Particular degree schemes will require that an applicant has studied the appropriate specialist area in their Bachillerato (e.g. science and technology specialism for degrees in sciences, mathematics, medical sciences or engineering).
Sweden	Avgangsbetyg with a total of at least 2500 points, with scores of MVG (excellent) or A or B in the majority of relevant subjects.

Afghanistan	Baccalauria / Baccalaureate Certificate would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Albania	Certificate of Maturity / Secondary School Leaving Certificate would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Algeria	School leaving qualifications would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Angola	The Habilitação Literárias (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Antigua and Barbuda	Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) in Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, French, History, Literature in English, Mathematics, Physics, Spanish with grades of AAA
Argentina	School leaving qualifications would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Armenia	Himnakan Yndhanur Krtutyan Attestat (Certificate of Basic Education) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Australia	Offers are likely to be for successful completion of one of the following qualifications, with a position between 98.5 and 99.5 in the Australia Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) ACT Year 12 Certificate Higher school certificate (HSC) from New South Wales Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE) South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) OR Senior Certificate from Queensland with an overall position in band 1.
Azerbaijan	Secondary School Leaving Certificate would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Bahamas	Bahamas Junior Certificate would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Bahrain	Tawjahiya (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)

Brazil	Certificado de Ensino Medio or University entrance examination (Vestibular, ENEM, PAS) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive applicatio (*please see note below)
Brunei	Brunei-Cambridge A-level with grades of AAA.
Cameroon	Cameroon Baccalauréat with at least 15 out of 20.
Canada	We accept all Canadian Provincial Secondary School qualifications. A typical example would be the OSSD from Ontario where we would be looking for a minimum of 85%.
Chile	Licencia de Educación Media would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
China	Senior High School Diploma, Chinese University Entrance Examination or 'GaoKao' would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Ecuador	Bachillerato would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Egypt	The Thanaweya A'ama (General Secondary School Certificate) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Ethiopia	School leaving qualifications would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Faroe Islands	Studentereksamen or Højere Forberedelseseksamen with an overall average score of at least 11.
Gambia	West African Senior School Certificate Examination would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Ghana	West African Senior School Certificate Examination would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Guatemala	Bachillerato would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Hong Kong	Hong Kong Advanced Level Certificate, with grades of AAA OR Associate degrees from Hong Kong, with a result of 3.8 or better. OR HKDSE with grade 5s in three elective subjects. (The exception is for candidates taking Mathematics, who would need a 5* in the compulsory Mathematics course and then a 5 in the Mathematics extended paper.)
India	Year XII qualification, studied with either the CBSE or ISC examination boards, with an achievement of 90% in each of the five subjects studied. Science subjects may also require that candidates take the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) entrance examinations as a pre-condition for entry.
Indonesia	Surat Tamat Sekolah Menengah Umum Tingkat Atas/STTB: SMA (Senior Secondary School Certificate of Completion) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Iran	National Entrance Exam (Kunkur) with a result of at least 80%, and the Pre-University Certificate (Peeshdaneshgahe) with scores of 18 or more.
Israel	Bagrut with 90%, with at least three subjects at level 5.
Japan	Kotogakko Sotsugyo Shomeisho (Upper Secondary School Leaving Certificate) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Jordan	Tawjihi (General Secondary Education Certificate) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Kazakhstan	Attestat/Svidetel' stvo o Srednem Obrazovanii (Certificate of Secondary Education) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Kenya	Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)

Mauritius	Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate with AAA.
Mexico	Bachillerato General would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Morocco	Baccalauréat with at least 18 out of 20.
Myanmar	School leaving qualifications would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Namibia	Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate with grades of AAA.
New Zealand	University Entrance Certificate with National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA) at Level 3 endorsed with Excellence.
Nigeria	West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or Senior School Certificate Education (SSCE) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Norway	Vitnemål fra den Videregående Skole (Upper Secondary Leaving Certificate) with grades of at least 5.0 in each subject.
Oman	Thanawiya Amma (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Pakistan	Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSC) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Qatar	Thanawaya Aa'ma Qatari (Qatar General Secondary Education Certificate) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)

Singapore	SIPCAL with three A grades at H2. Please note that because applicants following the Singaporean SIPCAL are educated and assessed in English they would not be required to take an English language proficiency test.

South Korea	Ilbankye Kodung Hakkyo (General High School Diploma) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application (*please see note below)
Sri Lanka	The Sri Lanka Advanced Level with AAA.

Switzerland	Maturitätszeugnis (Federal Maturity Certificate) Certificat De Maturité Baccalauréat Attestato Di Maturità Eidgenössisch Anerkanntes Kantonales Maturitätszeugnis Certificat De Maturité Cantonal Reconnu Par La Confédération Attestato Di Maturità Cantonale Riconosciuto Dalla Confederazione Cantonal Maturity Certificate Any of the above qualifications, with grades of at least 5.0 in each subject.

Thailand	Mathayom Suksa 6 (M6) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application.
Tunisia	Baccalauréat with of at least 16 out of 20.
Turkey	Anadolu Lisesi (Anatolian High School Diploma) with Grade Point Averages of 5.0. Devlet Lise Diplomasi (State High School Diploma) or Lise Bitirme Diplomasi (Private High School Diploma) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application.
UAE	Tawjihiyya (General Secondary Education Certificate/GSEC) would not be sufficient for candidates to make a competitive application.
Uganda	The Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) with AAA.

* If your qualification is listed above as being insufficient to make a competitive application to Oxford University then we would strongly recommend that you undertake further study if you wish to apply. You might want to consider taking A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB) or qualifications from the American education system, as shown at the top of this page. For further information about institutions offering these qualifications in your country, you may wish to contact your local British Council (www.britishcouncil.org) or the International Baccalaureate Organisation (www.ibo.org).

The first year of a Bachelors degree from another university could also be an acceptable alternative.
