European Languages and other areas studies

Oxford offers a wide choice of degrees enabling students to study one or two European languages and related literature, or a European Language in combination with another subject, such as Classics, a Middle Eastern Language, English, History or Philosophy. We also have a number of degrees focusing on one or more Oriental languages and related literature, history and culture. You can choose to study a Middle Eastern languages alongside Classics, or you may choose a combination of Theology and Oriental Studies.

Beginners’ languages

If you are interested in studying a language from scratch, you can choose to study two European languages, one of which may be a beginners’ language. All the Oriental languages, as well as Ancient Greek and Latin may be studied as beginners’ languages.

  • Russian
  • Italian
  • Portuguese
  • Modern Greek
  • Czech (with Slovak)

Oriental languages:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • Egyptology/Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies
    (includes Akkadian, Arabic, Aramaic and Syriac, Classical Greek, Coptic, Hebriew (Biblical and Mishnaic), Old Iranian, Hittite, or Sumerian)

  • Japanese
  • Persian
  • Sanskrit
  • Turkish
