Tests for students applying to study Modern Languages or Linguistics

Students who apply for any course including a Modern Language or Linguistics are required to take the Modern Languages and Linguistics Admissions Tests (MLAT) on 6 November 2013.  This test is in several parts: please see the tables below to see which parts are required for your course.

The MLAT is administered by the Admissions Testing Service, and you will need to register with them by 15 October 2013. For further information, please see http://www.mlatoxford.org.uk/. Specimen papers are available to download.

Test codes:
C
  Czech
F  French
G  German
M  Modern Greek
Italian
Portuguese
R  Russian
S  Spanish
A  Language Aptitude test
L  Linguistics test

e.g. French and German: FG. Candidates must take both the French test and the German test.

Where the letter is shown in brackets, this test is not necessarily required: you may or may not need to take it, depending on your level of proficiency at the time you apply. If you already have knowledge of the language you will usually be expected to take the test – for example if you speak this language at home or school, or if you are studying it to A-level or equivalent. If you are in any doubt about whether or not to take this test, please contact the Tutor for Admissions at your college of preference. If you intend to make an open application please contact the Admissions Information Centre for advice.

e.g. French and Czech: F(C).
Candidates must take the French test and will be required to sit the Czech test only if they already have knowledge of Czech.

Where there are two codes and these are both shown in brackets, neither test is officially required.  However, as the candidate must have knowledge of at least one of the languages, they must take at least one of the tests.

Students for single language courses (except French and German) are required to take test in Linguistics as each single language course (except French and German) includes the study of Linguistics in the first year.

Please note that students who take a language with Polish will take up Polish from the second year.  The first year of study will follow the same pattern as the single language course. Therefore, each course with Polish (except French with Polish and German with Polish) includes the study of Linguistics in the first year, and requires the test in Linguistics.
