Application Preparation Day for applicants from particular areas

The likelihood of a student going on to study at university varies based on a number of factors. One of those factors is where in the country that student lives. In some areas, a much lower proportion of people participate in higher education (known as POLAR quintile 1 and 2 areas). Students living in these areas are much less likely to have had access to guidance on preparing their university application, and we want to offer support to ensure that all candidates feel confident in making their applications to study at the University of Oxford, regardless of where in the country they live, or whether they know anyone else around them who has successfully applied to pursue a degree course at university.

The Application Preparation Day on Friday 6th September is a one day event that walks through each stage of the application process, offering advice, support and chance to practice different aspects of the admissions tests and interviews. In order to be eligible for a place on this event, you must be studying (any A Level or equivalent subjects) at a UK state school, living in a POLAR quintile 1 or 2 area, and planning to make your application this October. When applying for a place on the Application Preparation Day, you will be asked a number of questions that will help us to make sure that we are prioritising those who are the least likely to be receiving support similar to the kind we can offer in their schools and colleges, and who are currently under-represented in the University.

You can find out whether you live in a POLAR quintile 1 or 2 area by using the search tool on the Office for Students website. The search tool will give you a number from 1-5 in the first box (marked 'POLAR4 young person participation quintile'). If the number is 4-5, that means a large proportion of young people living near you go on to higher education; if the number is 1-2, then very few young people do.
