MSc in Surgical Science and Practice (part-time)

The Continuing Professional Development Centre, in conjunction with the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, has developed a new graduate taught MSc programme dealing with vital areas of postgraduate surgical training. The programme aims to attract future leaders of the profession, and to provide broad-based postgraduate training that will allow participants to develop their careers in a number of different directions.

This exciting part-time programme is designed to be completed in two to three years by full-time surgical trainees.  Six modules cover:

  • Surgical Technology, including an exceptional opportunity for hands-on experience with leading-edge surgical technology including the Da Vinci robot
  • Leadership and Management skills
  • Teamwork and patient safety
  • Clinical research methods
  • Quality improvement
  • Medical Education

Each module includes access to online resources as well as one week intensive face-to-face teaching in Oxford. In addition, participants will produce a research dissertation based on a work-related project.

Most part-time students on these programmes are already in full-time employment in related fields on commencement of the programmes.  The MSc aims to prepare surgical trainees for their future working lives and to equip them for the following career pathways:

  • Managing surgical units and leading surgical teams;
  • Becoming a medical educator;
  • Undertaking surgical and clinical research;
  • Embarking upon an academic career pathway.
