MSc in Surgical Science and Practice (part-time)

The MSc in Surgical Science and Practice is a part-time course consisting of six assessed taught modules and a research project with an associated dissertation. The course has been designed to be completed in two to three years by full-time surgical trainees, and its uniquely modular part-time nature allows students to fit their study around work.

The MSc in Surgical Science and Practice provides a life-long foundation in some of the most important additional skills which the future leaders of the surgical profession will need to acquire. The knowledge gained during the course will stand students in good stead throughout their careers.

This flexible programme is shared jointly by the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences and the Department for Continuing Education’s Continuing Professional Development Centre. The programme features teaching from the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, based in the world-renowned Department of Primary Health Care.

Taught by global experts, the six modules are:

  • Becoming a medical educator
  • Human factors, teamwork and communication
  • Introduction to surgical management and leadership
  • Quality improvement science and systems analysis
  • Surgical technology and robots
  • The practice of evidence-based healthcare in surgery

Each module includes access to online resources as well as one of week intensive face-to-face teaching in Oxford.

Academic resources

The module on surgical technology and robots features an exceptional opportunity for hands-on experience with leading-edge surgical technology, including the Da Vinci robot

The extensive resources of the University libraries are available to students, including the Continuing Education Library at Rewley House, the Radcliffe Science Library and the Cairns Library.

The programme also uses a virtual learning environment (VLE).

Entry requirements
  • An entry level qualification for specialist training in surgery e.g. MRCS
  • Proof of enrolment in a recognised specialist training programme
  • Evidence of several years of accumulated practical training
  • Evidence of relevant academic work in surgery e.g. presentations & publications
