Research programmes

DPhil in Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics

Course Code | 003670

Research in the Department is undertaken by strong, independent but interrelated groups addressing the challenges of modern biomedical research. Researchers are brought together under six specific research themes highlighted below, including themes that cut across all research in the department. In addition, research in multiple themes impacts on our understanding of many human diseases.

This structure promotes a range of innovative multidisciplinary basic research programmes, some of which translate all the way to the clinic.

  • Cardiac Science and Metabolic Control
  • Development and Reproduction
  • Functional Genomics
  • Ion Channels, Transporters and Signalling
  • Metabolism and Endocrinology
  • Neuroscience

Multiple cross-cutting platforms and concepts underpin the work in each theme including: Molecular Imaging; Computational Biology; Gene Delivery and RNAi; Metabolism; Gene Expression; Genomics and Informatics; Translational Research.

How to Apply

The deadlines for this course are 16 November 2012, 4 January 2013 and 8 March 2013. Most applications for studentships must be submitted by the January deadline. After these deadlines have passed, please contact the department as places may still be available: graduate-studies-information@dpag.ox.ac.uk

The standard set of materials you should send with any application to a research course comprises:

The research proposal for applicants to the DPhil in Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics should normally be two pages in length, covering areas such as the background to the research, methodology, expected results and the contribution to the field of learning.

In addition to the standard documents above, applicants to the DPhil in Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics should provide one (1) relevant academic essay or other writing sample from their most recent qualification of 2,000 words, or a 2,000-word extract of a longer work.

Please follow the detailed instructions in the Application Guide, and consult the Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics website for any additional guidance.

Academic resources

The Department has excellent facilities to support all aspects of its current research, including tissue culture, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, genomics, MRI, spectroscopy and animal models for cardiac and nervous system disease.

Equipment for radioimmunoassay, protein biochemistry, cell labelling and single cell injection are also available in specific laboratories. In addition to specific imaging systems within laboratories, there are shared confocal microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and image analysis facilities.

Primary library resource

Radcliffe Science Library

Graduate destinations

All graduate students in the Department have access to and are encouraged to participate in the varied Career Skills Workshops that are offered by the Medical Sciences Division.

Many graduates subsequently progress to careers in the medical, physiological and biological sciences in academia or industry.

Related programmes

Members of the Department participate in several Wellcome Trust and British Heart Foundation four-year DPhil programmes within the Medical Sciences Division:
