MSt in Music

The MSt can serve both as a self-contained programme for students wishing to pursue more advanced studies in musicology, performance or composition for one year; or as an excellent preparation for doctoral research.
Students follow a common structure with specialisms in either musicology, performance or composition at the end of the course, supported by appropriate individual supervision or instrumental tuition.
Assessment is by both:
- a portfolio comprising two parts:
- two essays or exercises on research methods relating to dissertation, performance or composition portfolio
- two essays in musicology
- one of:
- a 13,000 word dissertation in musicology or ethnomusicology, or an editorial exercise (edition), with prefatory matter, of comparable length
- a recital of about thirty minutes' duration, vocal or instrumental, of at least two contrasted pieces
- a musical composition of not more than fifteen minutes' duration
Seminar units are offered each year, in core areas and special topics.

MPhil in Music

The MPhil is designed for students wishing to attain a thorough grounding in musicology, performance, or composition at an advanced level, either as a preparation for doctoral research or an autonomous qualification.
In the first year, students follow the MSt in Music, proceeding in the second year to individual supervision leading to the completion of a 30,000-word dissertation, together with either a portfolio of essays (musicology), a one-hour recital (performance), or a portfolio of compositions (composition).

How to ApplyThe deadlines for the MPhil and MSt courses are 20 January and 9 March 2012. AHRC and
Clarendon applicants must apply by the January deadline. The standard set of materials you should send
with any application to a taught course comprises: In addition to the standard documents above,
applicants to the MPhil or MSt courses should provide two (2) relevant academic essays or other writing samples from their most recent qualification of 2,000 words each,
or 2,000-word extracts of longer work. Applicants to an MSt or MPhil in Composition or Performance should also provide a portfolio. The portfolio for applicants to Composition should comprise a composition, and the portfolio for applicants to Performance should comprise a recording of a performance. Please follow the detailed
