MSt in Literature and Arts

This interdisciplinary programme encompasses literature, history, art and architectural history and philosophy, and focuses on three sequential periods of British culture from Late Medieval to The Nineteenth Century.

The challenges of interdisciplinary study are addressed in two on-line modules, whilst the residences take full advantage of the university’s library, museum and monumental resources to encourage a multi-faceted understanding of the past.

  • Length of programme: Two years, part-time study comprising four five-day residences in Oxford and two online components

    Core courses:
    • British Culture in a Global Context
    • Five Views of c19th Oxford - Methodology and Critical Approaches 1 (Online)
    • An Interdisciplinary Case Study - Methodology and Critical Approaches 2 (Online)
    Optional courses:
    Over 3 residences students take 6 options from a range of disciplines in the humanities relating to British culture in the late medieval/early modern period, the ‘long’ eighteenth century and the ‘long’ nineteenth century.

    Subjects may include ‘The Late Medieval Church’, ‘Portraiture and Commemoration in the Sixteenth Century’, ‘Writing the Republic: Milton, Marvell and their Contemporaries’, ‘English Collectors, antique sculpture and Neo-Classicism’, ‘The Rise of the English Novel’, ‘Wesley and Wilberforce: Evangelicalism and British Culture’, ‘The British Empiricists’, ‘The Oxford Movement and Neo-Gothic’, ‘The Pre-Raphaelites and William Morris’

In addition to the standard documents above, applicants to the MSt should provide two (2) academic essays or other writing samples of 2,000 words each, or 2,000-word extracts of longer work.

Research Programmes

Part-time/Continuing Education

While we do not offer a DPhil programme in this subject, we may be able from time to time to take exceptional research students where we are able to offer appropriate supervision and either we, or, where relevant, the applicant's employer, can provide appropriate facilities. Applicants would need to demonstrate that they have skills and competencies in Literature and Arts.

The DPhil would be available on a part-time basis, to be completed in a minimum of four years, and would normally start in October. Informal enquires should be directed to the MSt course director.

Resources Available

Part-time/Continuing Education

Students will have full access to the Rewley House Continuing Education Library , the Bodleian Library (including its electronic resources) and other university libraries such as the English Faculty Library, the Sackler Art Library and the History Faculty Library.

The course will also draw upon the resources of the University’s museums and art galleries.
