DPhil in Evidence-Based Health Care (part-time)

Course Code | 003340

The part-time DPhil programme was designed primarily for graduates from the Oxford MSc in Evidence-Based Health Care, in which case the programme can be completed in a minimum of four years.

Applications will also be considered from others who can demonstrate that they have skills and competencies in EBHC, in which case the programme can completed in a minimum of six years. Applicants themselves need to have identified a suitable supervisor in Oxford who is willing to supervise before they apply for admission to the programme.

Thesis topics should have a significant focus on issues related to evidence-based practice, e.g. assessing the extent to which research findings are incorporated into practice; barriers to getting evidence into practice; implementation and evaluation of projects aiming to get evidence into practice; or methodological issues in research synthesis etc.

The DPhil should not focus on a primary research topic that would be better suited to a different discipline, e.g. health services research or primary research in a particular speciality.

DPhil in EBHC students do not have to be resident in Oxford. However, they will be expected to visit Oxford once a year for the DPhil Support Week.

Students based outside Oxford usually find it helpful to have a local supervisor  - an individual with a PhD or equivalent who is capable of supervising a research thesis - who has content knowledge in the area of their proposed research; for students based outside of the UK, identification of a suitable local supervisor is a pre-requisite for acceptance onto the programme.
