Postgraduate Diploma in Diplomatic Studies

This one-year residential course, the Foreign Service Programme, is designed for diplomats in the early to middle years of their career.

Most Foreign Service Programme members are established diplomats proposed for the course by their governments, who return to their practical career work after the course. It is sometimes possible to include a few non-diplomats with suitable background, personal qualities and working experience. 

Students who successfully complete the course may receive a Certificate or a Postgraduate Diploma in Diplomatic Studies, according to the level of study.

MSt in Diplomatic Studies

Course Code | 002715

Successful Postgraduate Diploma students may progress to a Master of Studies in Diplomatic Studies to be undertaken by distance learning during a second academic year.

  • Length of programme: Nine months (Certificate/Diploma, with additional academic year for MSt)
  • Core courses: Four core elements - International Politics; International Trade and Finance; Public International Law; and Diplomatic Practice
  • Study visits are made to international organisations, government ministries, multinational companies and media institutions

Entry requirements
Certificate

Students must have a good first degree (2.1, or 2.2) with evidence of subsequent relevant experience and development. Students are accepted on the basis of their academic quality, professional experience, two references (one academic, one professional) and the support of their employer.

PGDip

Students are admitted in the first instance to the Certificate. Their admission to the PGDip takes place at the end of the first term, on the basis of a transfer proposal and assessment of their first term’s work. The admissions committee must be satisfied that the candidate has reached a 2.1 level in his/her first term’s work.

MSt

Students are admitted in the first instance to the Certificate and transfer to the PGDIp at the end of their first term. Successful PGDip students may progress to a MSt to be undertaken by distance learning during a second academic year on the basis of a transfer proposal and assessment of their first year's work
