The Centre’s research is currently focused on a number of research programmes:

  • Theoretical Issues in law and society
  • Public law and government
  • Human rights in social context
  • Comparative media law and policy
  • Anthropology of law
  • Comparative legal cultures
  • Social foundations of constitutions
  • Civil justice
  • Transitional justice
  • Environmental law and policy
  • Regulation, self-regulation and compliance
  • Product liability and regulatory issues

Students are encouraged to work on projects linked to these broad areas, but may also undertake research on topics of their own choice, provided adequate supervision is available.

In addition to the standard documents above, applicants to the DPhil and MSt should provide one (1) relevant academic essay or other writing sample from their most recent qualification of 2,000 words, or a 2,000-word extract of longer work.

The Bodleian Social Science Library supports the teaching, learning and research needs of departments in the Social Sciences Division.

Oxford also has the largest Law library in the UK, with a world-class collection; it has extensive coverage, both paper and online, in all major areas of Law. 

Graduate destinations

Graduates typically continue to careers in academia, or find work within the public or private sector dealing with policy development and implementation, as well as different types of consultancy work related to socio-legal issues.

Entry requirements and selection criteria

Candidates for a research place at the Centre should have, or expect to obtain, a good undergraduate degree in Law or in one of the social sciences.
