Situated in the heart of Oxford, next to the Bodleian Library and the Radcliffe Camera, Brasenose is a friendly and diverse community with a strong tradition of academic excellence. Brasenose's graduates form a vibrant and international body, making up just under a third of the student population. The intellectual and social contribution graduates make to the College community is highly valued.

The Tutor for Graduates has oversight of the academic progress and welfare of graduate students. Each graduate is also allocated a College Advisor, who is usually a College Fellow working in a related academic field.

A wide variety of activities are arranged for graduate students, including special dinners, guest speakers, and regular presentations of research by Fellows and graduate students.

Accommodation and meals

The College owns graduate buildings in St Cross Road, near the English, Law, Politics and Economics faculties, and in Hollybush Row, near the Saïd Business School and railway station. There is also limited accommodation available for couples.

Accommodation in the St Cross building is laid out in clusters of five bed-sitting rooms with two shared showers and a well-equipped kitchen.

Accommodation in the Hollybush Row building is single rooms with en-suite bathrooms and shared kitchens.

Meals can be taken in college during term-time - there are formal dinners with table service three nights per week, and informal self-service meals available at other times, including breakfast during the week and brunch on weekends. There is also a college snack bar, Gertie's, which offers sandwiches and snacks outside Hall dining hours.

  • Letting period: 44 or 50 weeks

Funding and prizes

Graduate studentships

Graduate studentships are full funding awards covering all University and College fees and living expenses. Brasenose College co-funds around twenty-five studentships each year, with a range of departments and faculties, and also with the Clarendon Fund.

Information about available studentships and application procedures can be found on the Clarendon Fund website or departmental websites. Applications are made via the department in which the degree will be taken rather than through the College.

For further information on sources of funding for which you may be eligible, please see the Oxford Funding Search.

Graduate scholarships

Brasenose College also offers up to twelve new Senior Hulme Scholarships each year to the best doctoral students. They are not full funding awards but a recognition of academic excellence, and consist of a research allowance of £225 per annum, in addition to the standard graduate research allowance, plus certain High Table dining rights.

Graduate research allowances

All graduate students at Brasenose College benefit from a research allowance of between £110 (for a one-year course) and £500 (for a DPhil) for research-related expenses such as conference attendance, research trips or the purchase of books.

Additional assistance

Other sources of financial support that graduates may apply for whilst at Brasenose include:

  • Hulme Completion Grants
  • Research Grants
  • Annual Funding Student Support Grants

Library and IT services

Brasenose has three excellent libraries with 24/7 access to members - the Main Library (Twitter BNCLibrary), Hulme Library and Stallybrass Memorial Library - which hold around 55,000 titles and subscribe to over 50 periodicals.

The Main Library is a light and airy space overlooking Radcliffe Square divided into sixteen study bays with power connections for students' laptops. The Hulme Library comprises the modern history, politics and geography collections and the Stallybrass Memorial Library is a specialised law library.

Each library has computers with internet access and colour printing, scanning and photocopying facilities. There are also computers in the HCR and a dedicated College computing room, both with printing facilities.

There is wireless internet access in all public areas of the college and network connections are available in all study bedrooms.

Sport, music and college facilities

Brasenose has its own sports ground near the College with soccer, rugby and cricket pitches - including a cricket pavilion - and a well-equipped boathouse on the river.

Brasenose has a strong sporting tradition and its rugby and rowing teams are particularly renowned. On the more recreational side of sport, the College's JCR rents out four punts in the summer and a croquet set for use in the College's New Quad.

Brasenose has a Director of College Music who supports the College's many fine musicians through advice, support and organises a weekly concert series each term. He is also in charge of the college's famously fun and friendly chapel choir, which is open to all. Practice rooms are available, and small grants for music-related purchases such as scores and coaching are always considered.

The Platnaeur' Concerts, given by professional musicians, are a termly highlight in the College's schedule, and in recent years the summer Arts Festival featuring music, art and drama has been programmed using the College's beautiful facilities, including New Quad and the Chapel.

Facilities for students with disabilities

There are specially adapted rooms in Brasenose’s graduate buildings suitable for students with disabilities.

Common Room

The College has a common room for its vibrant community of graduate students, the Hulme Common Room (HCR), which is run by an elected committee of graduate students. The HCR community fosters academic excellence, diversity and intercultural learning.

Throughout the year, the HCR Committee organises a wide-ranging social, sporting, and cultural programme. Highlights include:

  • BLURBS, an academic dinner event attended also by the Senior Common Room
  • yoga/pilates and kickboxing classes
  • wine tastings
  • exchange dinners with other colleges
  • trips to see the ballet, orchestras and cinema
  • cultural excursions, such as the Parliament tour in London

The HCR has kitchen facilities and is regularly stocked with hot chocolate, coffee, tea and toast. It also offers a TV and subscriptions to major UK newspapers as well as several international publications and magazines.

Graduate students are also automatically made members of the Junior Common Room (JCR) and have access to its activities as well.
