Applying for graduate study

Number 4

Check the application deadlines for your programme

Leave yourself enough time to put together your application, and please apply early!

The University has three main application deadlines: 16 November 2012; 4 January 2013 (Medical Sciences, Politics and Philosophy) or 18 January 2013 (all other programmes); and 8 March 2013, but not all programmes of study use all of the them. Check the entry for your course in the Course Guide to see which application deadlines are relevant.

Applying after 8 March

The main deadlines for entry in 2013-14 have now passed. Programmes which have places still available and/or new studentship-funded places will remain open to standard applications; please note that these programmes may close at any time that places are filled.

Please check if the course you are interested in is still accepting applications on our Open Programmes page, which gives the current admission status of all graduate programmes.

If more than one application deadline is listed for your chosen programme, this indicates that the department to which you are applying considers applications in two or more separate batches. The different deadlines are intended to structure the submission and assessment of applications, and you may submit an application to any deadline offered for your course.

After each application deadline, the department evaluates all applications received up to that date, firstly against set academic criteria, and secondly in comparison with each other. Decision letters are normally sent out by departments approximately 8-10 weeks after the relevant application deadline, therefore applicants to earlier deadlines will receive earlier notification of the outcome of their application(s).

Some programmes may accept applications after the main deadlines if places are still available. Some also offer separate application deadlines for specific studentships. For specific information relating to your programme please check the department’s website - links are available on the subject pages in the Course Guide.

You will need to submit all the required supporting materials by the deadline and you will also need to make sure that your referees will submit their references by the deadline.

Remember, you must apply by the January application deadline for central University funding and AHRC studentships. International students requiring a visa are also encouraged to apply as early as is feasible since the administrative process for obtaining a visa can be lengthy in some regions.
