Graduate accommodation

At the University, full-time graduate students are required to reside within twenty-five miles of the Carfax tower, which marks the center of the city of Oxford, during term time. This ensure that all graduates have full and consistent access to the world-class academic resources and thriving college communities which underpin studying and researching at Oxford.

There is a wide range of accommodation options available to students, both privately and within the University, to suit a variety of different needs and living arrangements.

College accommodation

Colleges are usually the primary providers of accommodation to Oxford's graduate students. Most colleges are able to offer accommodation to their graduate students for all or part of their programme of study; some also make provisions for specific accommodation requirements, such as accommodation for student couples or families or accommodation specifically adapted for students with disabilities.

Some college accommodation is part of the historical college buildings in central Oxford, although some colleges have also invested in modern off-site developments located close to the center.

There is a summary of the accommodation costs and provision for each college in the College Guide

College accommodation is limited and in high demand, and if you would like to have the option of college accommodation it is therefore advised that you apply to the earliest available deadline for your programme. If you are made an offer of a place to study at Oxford, you will be able to access more detailed and relevant information for your particular college once you have been notified of your accepting college.

University accommodation

The University’s Accommodation Office can help with finding accommodation for graduate students if college accommodation is unavailable, or if they are unable to provide the type of housing needed.

The Accommodation Office lets and manages over 600 residential units for graduate students and their partners and families on several sites in or close to the centre of Oxford.

Private accommodation

If University accommodation is not immediately available, the Oxford Student Pad site has lists of all types of accommodation in the private sector available to let to students and, where needed, their partners and/or children.

Oxford University Student Union (OUSU) produce a Living Out Guide, which includes information and advice to anyone who is looking for, or living in, private rented accommodation in Oxford. The guide covers areas of Oxford where you could live, what to look for, and what to do before you sign a contract. It also covers financial issues, legal standards, health and safety, and what to do when you move out.
