On this day in 1861, William Crookes published the work in which he had used spectroscopy to discover the element, Thallium. In 1854, Crookes moved to Oxford to become Superintendent of the Meteorological Department of the Radcliffe Astronomical Observatory, where his scientific photography skills were in great demand.
