On this day in 1532, Thomas More resigned the Lord Chancellorship in front of Henry VIII, in a public defence of church independence. More's opposition to the King ultimately resulted in his execution. Famous for writing Utopia, he studied at Canterbury College for two years from 1492, and was made high steward of the University in 1524. Credit: ODNB
