Britain revoked the Treaty of Amiens, thus declaring war on Napoleon's France on this day in 1803. Prime Minister Henry Addington, who studied at Brasenose during the 1770s, had invested much in a strategy of pursuing peace, but this proved impossible in the long-term. Addington's government fell in 1804, but he later served (as Viscount Sidmouth) in the 'Ministry of all the talents' and as Home Secretary. Credit: ODNB
