Anaesthetic Science

Irene Tracey, Professor of Pain Research at Oxford, was appointed Nuffi eld Professor of Anaesthetic Science and a Fellow of Pembroke College.

Philosophy of Law

Leslie Green, Professor of Law and Philosophy at York University, Toronto and a Regular Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Texas at Austin, was appointed Professor of the Philosophy of Law and a Fellow of Balliol College.

Physiology

Gero Miesenböck, Associate Professor of Cell Biology and Associate Professor of Cellular and Molecular Physiology at Yale University School of Medicine, was appointed Waynfl ete Professor of Physiology and a Fellow of Magdalen College.

Musculoskeletal Science

Cyrus Cooper, Professor of Rheumatology and Director of the MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre at the University of Southampton and Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist at Southampton General Hospital, was appointed Norman Collisson Professor of Musculoskeletal Science and a Fellow of St Peter’s College.

Neuroscience

Jonathan Flint, Wellcome Trust Senior Clinical Fellow at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford and Professor of Molecular Psychiatry and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist, was appointed Michael Davys Professor of Neuroscience and Fellow of Merton College.

Neuroimmunology

Lars Fugger, Professor of Clinical Immunology and Senior Clinical Research Fellow in the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, Honorary Consultant in the Department of Clinical Immunology at the John Radcliffe Hospital and Professor of Clinical Immunology at Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, was appointed Professor of Neuroimmunology and a Fellow of Oriel College.

Plant Science

Nicholas Harberd, Project Leader at the John Innes Centre, Norwich, and Honorary Professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of East Anglia, was appointed Professor of Plant Science and a Fellow of St John’s College. Upon the retirement of Professor Chris Leaver, Professor Harberd will assume the Sibthorpian Professorship of Plant Science.

Microbiology

Stephen Bell, Programme Leader at the MRC Cancer Cell Unit at the University of Cambridge, was appointed Professor of Microbiology and a Fellow of Wadham College.

Management Studies

Thomas Noe, A B Freeman Professor of Finance at Tulane University, New Orleans, and Visiting Professor at the Saïd Business School, Oxford, was appointed Ernest Butten Professor of Management Studies and a Fellow of Balliol College.

Investment

Sandra Robertson, co-head of portfolio management at the Wellcome Trust, took up the post of Chief Investment Officer on 17 September.

Economics

Peyton Young, Professorial Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford, Scott and Barbara Black Professor of Economics at John Hopkins University and Senior Fellow in Economic Studies and Co-Director at the Center on Social and Economics Dynamics at the Brookings Institution, was appointed James Meade Professor of Economics. He remains a Fellow of Nuffield College.

Mathematical Finance

Xunyu Zhou, Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Adjunct Professor in the School of Business at the University of Science and Technology of China, was appointed Professor of Mathematical Finance and a Fellow of St Hugh’s College.

Her Majesty the Queen appointed Sarah Foot, Professor of Early Medieval History at the University of Sheffi eld, to the Regius Professorship of Ecclesiastical History. Professor Foot is a Lay Canon of Christ Church.

Regius Professor of Theology

Her Majesty the Queen appointed Nigel Biggar, Professor of Theology and Ethics at the University of Dublin and Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, to the Regius Professorship of Moral and Pastoral Theology. Professor Biggar is a Canon of Christ Church.

Music

Eric Clarke, Professor of Music at the University of Sheffi eld, was appointed Heather Professor of Music and a Fellow of Wadham College.

American History

Lizabeth Cohen, Howard Mumford Jones Professor of American Studies at Harvard University, was appointed Harold Vyvyan Harmsworth Professor of American History and a Fellow of The Queen’s College for the academic year 2007–8.

Regius Professor of History

Professor Alex Halliday, Professor of Geochemistry, took up the post as Head of the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division. He remains a Fellow of St Hugh’s College.

Linguistics

Aditi Lahiri, Professor of General Linguistics at the University of Konstanz, Germany, was appointed Professor of Linguistics and a Fellow of Somerville College.

Broadcast Media

Anthony Lilley, Chief Executive of the interactive media production company Magic Lantern Productions and Executive Producer of Channel 4’s broadband channelFourDocs, was appointed News International Visiting Professor of Broadcast Media for the academic year 2007–8. The post is associated with Green College.

George Eastman Visiting Professor

Frederick Schauer, Frank Stanton Professor of the fi rst Amendment at the John F Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, has been appointed to the George Eastman Visiting Professor and a Fellow of Balliol College for the academic year 2007–8.
