Wolfson College 1996, DPhil in Zoology

I am Head of the Department of Ecosystems and the Environment at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.

I chose my DPhil in Zoology because The Wildlife Conservation Research Unit in Oxford's Department of Zoology reflected the newest and most relevant approach to biodiversity conservation in the UK and Europe. I planned to develop an academic career back in Chile in wildlife science, and Oxford was the right place to be.

Oxford is not just a university experience – it is a life experience

I would encourage young people to apply to study this degree themselves, because learning about the diversity of life, and new approaches to conserving biodiversity, is just so fascinating. Added to this is the highly advanced, and multicultural, research environment at Oxford.

The benefits of living and studying at Wolfson College were the sense of community, diversity of cultures, and the many academic activities: a fascinating life experience that I will never forget.

Oxford is full of opportunities and experiences, both within each college and within the various academic faculties and departments of the University. You have lectures with amazing scientists, and work alongside brilliant colleagues. Prioritising what you do with your time and working independently are the first essential skills to be developed.

I have enjoyed a brilliant academic career, creating my own research group back in Chile (Fauna Australis) inspired by the example set by The Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU). As Head of the Department of Ecosystems and the Environment at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile I oversee the graduate Conservation and Wildlife Management programme. I have continued to collaborate with Oxford since I left in 2000.

Oxford is not just a university experience – it is a life experience. History, tradition, innovation, culture and a beautiful setting mean you get the best of Britain, and the best of the world, all in one place.
