About the University
Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world, and a leader in learning, teaching and research.
On this day in 1946, the High IQ Club was formed from 12 St John Street, Oxford. It quickly changed its name to Mensa. Lancelot Ware, a founding member, was a student at Lincoln College at the time. Ware was to leave the society in 1950 over disagreements with his co-founder over social policy, but returned in the 1960s, when he was welcomed back by Mensans keen to portray a less controversial version of their own past.
