The University’s Department of Biochemistry is ranked third among Biomedicine departments worldwide, and the highest among life sciences departments in the UK. Its dazzlingly sleek new home is one of the University’s newest additions. This groundbreaking workspace is just the beginning of the University’s Science Area development. The multicoloured glass-finned building, completed in 2008, houses a highly interactive research space in which diverse groups can pursue the underlying theme that runs through the work of the Department – essentially, to understand how the ‘gears and levers’ inside a cell work and fit together. It is hoped that the state-of-the-art research facilities and forward-looking design with its chill-out/brainstorm areas will advance the way some of the most eminent scientists in the field work, both within their department and beyond, with the ultimate aim of encouraging collaboration across the sciences at Oxford. |
