The Old Road Campus

Old Road Campus

The Old Road Campus, immediately across the road from the new Cancer Centre at the Churchill Hospital, is home to some of Oxford’s primary cancer research teams, as well as to the very successful academic departments of Primary Health Care and Public Health, the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, the Oxford University Library Service Knowledge Centre, the Jenner Vaccine Institute, the Richard Doll Building, which houses epidemiological studies and clinical trial services, and the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics. The Campus also has close links and convenient access to Oxford’s Science Area, the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, the NHS John Radcliffe Hospital, the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and the Warneford Hospital. The University’s partnership with local hospitals means that here, science and medical care are integrated more closely than anywhere else.

The Park Hospital masterplan proposes the construction of four new University buildings on the adjoining Park Hospital site, which is east of the Old Road Campus and now surplus to NHS requirements. Specifically, the masterplan, proposes the construction of four new buildings around a central green with extensive pedestrian passageways and routes provided as connections between the two campuses. These new buildings will accommodate more than 13,000 square metres of floorspace, including a building dedicated primarily to offices with public amenities on the ground floor, two laboratory buildings designed to complement the existing buildings at the Old Road Campus, and a fourth building designed to accommodate either office or laboratory space. With all new facilities designed to house a mix of advanced research and offices, the development will enable the University to continue researching in its existing accommodation, whilst expanding its facilities, with the intention of innovative cross-departmental programmes developing as a result.
