Worcester College

Worcester

Having recently completed the biggest housing programme in its history – the construction of 229 en-suite study-bedrooms, allowing it to accommodate all its undergraduates for their whole time in Oxford – the college is now planning further rooms, to be able to offer accommodation to all its resident graduates, too.

With 450 students already living on site, it has retained consultants to plan a major redevelopment of the kitchen and dining arrangements. This project, together with an expansion of the library, a large lecture theatre and seminar rooms, is to be commissioned as part of the programme to mark the 300th anniversary of the re-foundation of the college in 2014.

Further information

    Founded: 1714

Worcester College occupies the site of Gloucester College, founded in 1283 for monks who were housed in separate camerae built by their different Benediction abbeys and monasteries. Some of these charming medieval cottages survive to counterbalance the elegant eighteenth century Library, Hall, Chapel and Terrace. This main quad is surrounded by landscaped, wooded gardens, with a lake and sports ground beyond – a favourite location for plays, balls or quiet contemplation of the wildfowl.
