St Hugh's College

St Hugh's

On the 13 May 2008, the University of Oxford China Centre was officially opened by the University’s Chancellor, Lord Patten of Barnes. The owner of precious land near the historic centre of the University, and minutes from the planned new campus for the Humanities and Mathematics at the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, the college has the ideal space for a new building.

The inspired design for the China Centre will reflect the dignity and dynamism which befits such a hub of cross-disciplinary activity, devoted to the study of, collaboration with, and welcome of visitors from one of the most significant and growing economic and cultural powers of the world. The Centre is already the largest of its kind in Europe, with a new building; plans are underway to expand further by appointing new posts and creating scholarships.

Further information

    Founded: 1886

Wordsworth’s great niece, Elizabeth, founded this college in a beautiful garden-filled site in leafy north Oxford to give impoverished women an Oxford education. A century later, St Hugh’s decided to accept men too, and it is now one of Oxford’s largest colleges, still with an emphasis on opening Oxford up to the brightest and most deserving.
