The eighteenth century Radcliffe Observatory stands at the heart of the college and despite a recent restoration of the building, along with internal refurbishment, the exterior stonework of the north face requires the same attention as the restored areas and the tower interior is in need of repair. A project has been proposed to both repair the structures and equip the upper tower with display cabinets permitting specialist exhibitions of artworks and astronomy. The college also has plans for a new building on the site of the Observatory’s kitchen garden. Giving spaces for Fellows and students to meet and work, the building will foster a dynamic, creative environment, encouraging collaboration and developing the college’s work on public engagement in the understanding of science and society. Much-needed additional accommodation will allow more graduate students to live in the heart of the college.
