Preparation works for the new £8.5 million Acer Nethercott Sports Hall at Iffley Road Sports Centre is due to start this week.
The first stage of works will focus on the North West corner of the sports centre, including the construction of the new four court sports hall, associated changing facilities and a multi-purpose activity room for fitness classes, which will be open to the local community.
The new sports hall, which is next to the track where Sir Roger Bannister broke the four minute mile, is expected to house the UK’s first light smart floor, which will allow users to change LED floor markings at the touch of a button. Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor William James said that the new sports hall would give the University a ‘globally competitive’ facility.
Initial work will start with the removal of trees and the installation of site cabins. Internal works will begin on 22 August with external construction work on the new sports hall commencing in mid-September. Deliveries to site will be via Jackdaw Lane.
Beard Construction has been chosen as the project’s principal contractor.
